The inauguration of the new rehabilitation facility at St. Benedict Menni Health Center in Liberia marked a significant moment for mental health care and for the continued mission of Sisters Hospitallers in the country.
During the opening ceremony, Sr Lourdes Sanz, Superior of the English Delegation of Sisters Hospitallers, described the occasion as “a day of hope” for women experiencing mental illness and social exclusion.
Addressing those gathered at the event, she reflected on the deeper meaning behind the opening of the new unit: “We gather not only to open a new service, but to affirm a simple and powerful truth, every woman deserves dignity, care, and a chance to heal.”
The new unit has been created as part of the Hospitaller mission to respond to situations of vulnerability through prevention, rehabilitation, reintegration and recovery, continuing the commitment of Sisters Hospitallers to person-centred and community-based mental health care.
In her address, Sr Lourdes also highlighted the importance of providing women-centred mental healthcare, recognising that many women living with mental health conditions face experiences of trauma, discrimination and stigma that require specialised support rooted in trust, safety and compassion.
“This is a place where women can be welcomed with dignity rather than judgment,” she said. “A place where healing and reintegration can truly begin.”
The inauguration brought together healthcare professionals, local authorities, collaborators, families and community members, all united in the shared commitment to strengthening mental health support in Liberia and promoting greater inclusion and understanding.
More than a new facility, this new proyect represents a space of accompaniment, recovery and hope for women who often face exclusion and vulnerability. Through this initiative, Sisters Hospitallers continue working to ensure that mental health care remains centred on dignity, compassion and the value of every person.
In the coming days, we will also be sharing more photographs, testimonies and highlights from the inauguration event held on 23 May.
