We would like to introduce you to Rukhsana Bibi, , who has worked at the Footherley Hall Home centre in Shenstone, UK, for 26 years.

What is your name and how long have you been working in the Sisters Hospitallers?

My name is Rukhsana Bibi and I have worked for Sisters Hospitallers for 26 years.

Could you tell us about your experience working with older adults?

I have found my experience working with older adults rewarding, as the littlest thing you can do for them makes them happy. I had no experience in this field until I came to work here and found it to be the best job I have ever had.

What motivates you to continue working with older adults after so many years?

The fact I can make a difference to how well the residents can be looked after, and the rewards I get from caring for someone is priceless.

What kind of activities are carried out in the Sisters Hospitallers’ centres for the elderly, and how is the Hospitaller charism reflected in them?

The activities we do here are a variety of quizzes, sing-a-longs, outings, chair exercises, and painting. Walks around the grounds. The hospitaller charism is reflected in these as we include everyone, make them feel welcomed and cared for, and promote their wellbeing at every opportunity.

How do you involve the families of the residents in the activities?

When residents’ families visit staff are always making them feel welcome. Residents enjoy seeing children, and animals, and singing along to old songs and whilst they may not remember the activity afterward, in that moment, they are smiling and happy.

What message would you like to give to families who have older adults in their lives?

That they are precious and just need love and care, in this busy world we live in we realize the importance of others when it is too late, enjoy the time you have together.
