The legacy of St Benedict Menni continues not only in our services, but in the people who carry this mission forward.

On the anniversary of his birth, we remember the legacy of compassion, courage and commitment that continues to inspire the mission of Sisters Hospitallers around the world

On 11 March, the Hospitaller Family commemorates the birth of Saint Benedict Menni, priest of the Order of Saint John of God and founder of the Congregation of the Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Born in Milan in 1841, Benedict Menni dedicated his life to restoring and strengthening the mission of hospitality during a time of great social and health challenges. With deep faith and remarkable determination, he worked tirelessly to bring care and dignity to people experiencing illness, vulnerability and social exclusion.

His vision went beyond immediate assistance. Benedict Menni understood that true care required both compassion and organisation. Through his work, he helped rebuild the Hospitaller Order in Spain and later founded the Congregation of the Sisters Hospitallers together with Maria Josefa Recio and Maria Angustias Giménez, creating a new path of care especially for people with mental illness.

From its beginnings, the Congregation was born with a clear mission: to offer professional care and human closeness to those most in need, particularly people suffering from mental health conditions who were often forgotten or marginalised by society.

More than a century later, this mission continues to guide the work of Sisters Hospitallers across the world. In hospitals, rehabilitation centres, social care services and community programmes, the spirit of hospitality first embodied by Saint Benedict Menni remains alive.

His legacy reminds us that hospitality is more than an act of care. It is a way of recognising the dignity of every person and responding with compassion, professionalism and commitment.

Today, as we remember the birth of Saint Benedict Menni, we give thanks for the inspiration of his life and renew our dedication to continuing the mission he began: caring for those who need it most and making hospitality visible in our world.
