A Covenant of Love: Sr Janet Kaba Renews Her Religious Vows

On the third renewal of her vows, Sr Janet reflects on God’s faithfulness, the experiences that have shaped her vocation and her desire to continue living Hospitality with an open heart

On 18 August 2026, Sr Janet Kaba renewed her religious vows for the third time, continuing her journey of consecrated life as a Sister Hospitaller.

The celebration brought together the Sisters in prayer and thanksgiving, with Lauds integrated into the Holy Mass. Sr Lourdes María Sanz, Superior of the Delegation of England, received her vows on behalf of Sr Idília Maria Carneiro, Superior General of the Congregation.

For Sr Janet, who is currently living her community and apostolic experience, this renewal comes after three years of learning, personal growth and discovering more deeply what it means to follow Jesus through Hospitality.

Her journey has been shaped by the people who have accompanied her, the experiences of community life and the daily opportunities to serve others. It has also led her to a deeper understanding of her relationship with God, which she describes as a covenant founded on His love and faithfulness.

As she takes this next step, Sr Janet shares a personal reflection on the gratitude, hope and trust with which she renews her commitment.

A Covenant and a Renewed Yes

“My daughters, how much we must thank our Lord for calling us to His holy service, and for making us understand that the most important thing is to serve and love our Lord and to save our souls.”

St Benito Menni, Letter 475

It is with immense joy and gratitude that I write about my experience of renewing my vows for the third time. I am grateful to God for the gift of my hospitaller vocation, for my faith, hope and trust in Him, and for the numerous opportunities granted to me to experience His motherly love and compassion through diverse situations and events during this time.

I am grateful to my Superior General and my Delegation Superior, together with their Councillors, who gave me once more the grace to renew my vows and to continue this journey with the Lord in living and practising Hospitality.

I appreciate my family, my Sisters in the communities in London, especially those in Shenstone, where I am having my experience of community life and mission, and all my friends and loved ones for supporting me and being part of my journey so far.

My relationship with God is a covenant initiated by Him, and the more I allow myself to be drawn closer to Him, contemplating the merciful heart of Jesus, the more convinced I become that only in Him are my worth, my dignity and my true identity.

It is the experience of the compassionate and motherly love I receive from God that gives meaning to my life today and the courage to renew my yes.

My journey thus far has been three years of grace, of love, of surrender, service, self-discovery and growth, of learning to be more compassionate and of walking with Jesus in the spirit of Hospitality. It has been a journey of deepening my identity as a hospitaller, undergoing a personal transformation through the many experiences the Congregation offers me and the realities we are living today.

My renewed yes is thus a response to God’s faithfulness and constant commitment in our covenant. It is an experience which fills me with a strong desire to renew my vows this year with a “yes” profoundly rooted in hopefulness and trust that He who initiated it loves me, is eternally present with me and will sustain and transform me in this adventure of love with Him.

The celebration was solemn, with Lauds integrated into the Mass. Sr Lourdes María Sanz, the Delegation Superior, received my vows on behalf of Sr Idília Maria Carneiro, Superior General. The animation was amazing, with beautiful decorations that made the whole celebration and the rest of the day special.

This year is profound for me because I am called anew and challenged to be more faithful to my daily commitments and to allow myself to be transformed so that I may live my hospitaller vocation fully, with mercy and compassion.

I am happy and grateful because it is a new beginning, an opportunity to become more immersed in the plans of God through many mediations, community life, the apostolate, my formation and my studies in Theology. Most especially, through my experiences of living in and from the heart of Jesus in our hospitaller mission.

So, I pray for the grace of openness, docility and the internalisation of my daily experiences as I take this step forward, united with Mary, our Mother, and all the people who love and support me.
