Following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the Catholic Church prepares for a significant event: the election of a new pope. This process, known as the conclave, is steeped in centuries-old traditions and spiritual significance. The upcoming conclave is scheduled to commence on May 7, 2025, within the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City
The term “conclave” originates from the Latin cum clave, meaning “with a key,” reflecting the seclusion of the cardinal electors during the election process. This practice ensures that the selection of the new pope is conducted without external influence, allowing for prayerful discernment.
In this conclave, 135 cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote. These electors will reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae and convene in the Sistine Chapel for the voting sessions . The process requires a two-thirds majority to elect the new pontiff.
Each day, up to four ballots may be cast. After each voting session, the ballots are burned, and the resulting smoke signals the outcome to the public gathered in St. Peter’s Square: black smoke (fumata nera) indicates no decision, while white smoke (fumata bianca) announces the successful election of a new pope .
If no candidate achieves the required majority after three days, the cardinals may pause for a day of prayer and reflection before resuming the voting process.
The conclave is not merely a procedural event; it is a profound spiritual journey. The cardinal electors seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to choose a leader who will shepherd the Church in faith and service. This period is marked by intense prayer, reflection, and a deep sense of responsibility.
As the Church stands at this pivotal moment, the faithful around the world are called to unite in prayer for the cardinal electors and the future pope. The Sisters Hospitallers, committed to serving those in need, join in this global prayer, trusting in divine guidance for the Church’s next leader.
