Download the history of the night that changed the destiny of our congregation

On a day like today 143 years ago, our founding mothers, María Josefa Recio and María Angustias, left their home in Granada to join Father Menni. Following the example of Jesus the Good Samaritan, they founded the congregation of Sisters Hospitallers with the aim of caring for women with mental illness, a sector of society that was marginalised and invisible at the time.

This is a very special day for all of us because it was the first step to built the congregation as we knew it today. Our mission is more alive than ever in each of the 85 centres of our congregation around the world, which help more than 820,000 people each year to embrace their suffering and find meaning in their pain.
