Sister Hospitaller greeting a child during General Government visit in Africa

General Council visit in Africa strengthens hospitality and shared mission

From 17 to 22 February, our centres in Ghana welcomed the Canonical Visit of the General Council, a significant moment of communion, attentive listening and shared responsibility within our Congregation.

Sr Mª Carmen Martín García, Second General Councillor, and Sr Maria Antónia Moreira Guerra, General Bursar, represented the General Council. They were accompanied by Sr Lourdes Sanz, Superior of the English Delegation, and Sr Mary Ann Curimatmat, Bursar of the Delegation. Together, they carried out this visit in communion with Sr Idília María Carneiro, Superior General, who convened the Canonical Visit in accordance with the orientations of the Congregation.

During these days, the Sisters visited our centres in Ghana:  St Francis Xavier Hospital and Benito Menni Hospital.

Throughout the visit, they met healthcare professionals, administrative staff and local leadership. These encounters fostered open dialogue and careful listening, enabling a deeper understanding of the realities, challenges and hopes present in each centre.

The purpose of the visit was to gain firsthand insight into the service offered and its alignment with the Hospital Model. It was also an opportunity to greet patients, to listen to the Sisters and collaborators, and to express sincere gratitude for the daily commitment shown in caring for those entrusted to us.

The Canonical Visit further provided space to review governance, organisation and sustainability. This reflective process supports responsible stewardship and strengthens long-term stability, ensuring that our centres continue to respond to local healthcare needs with professionalism, clarity and fidelity to our charism.

Above all, the visit strengthened co-responsibility within the culture of hospitality that unites us. It renewed bonds between the local communities and the wider Congregation, encouraging shared discernment and collaboration for the future.

We are deeply grateful for the welcome and generosity extended throughout these days. Rooted in faith and guided by our charism, we continue our mission of hospitality in action across Africa.
