We believe that starting honest, compassionate conversations about dementia can break down stigma, and lead to better care—right from the beginning

At Sisters Hospitallers, we witness the importance of communication in dementia care every day. Whether it’s a heartfelt chat with a family member or a quiet moment of connection with a resident, conversation can transform fear into understanding—and silence into support.

This year’s Dementia Action Week theme, Start the conversation, make the difference,” reminds us just how powerful talking about dementia can be. While nearly one million people are currently living with dementia in the UK, the topic is still surrounded by uncertainty, discomfort, and stigma. Many families delay speaking up, unsure of what to say or how to begin. But avoiding the conversation often means missing opportunities to seek help, plan ahead, and offer emotional support when it’s needed most.

Starting the conversation doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means creating space to listen, to share, and to walk through the unknown together. A simple “I’ve noticed some changes—how are you feeling?” can open the door to clarity, connection, and care.

At Sisters Hospitallers, our mission is rooted in hospitality, compassion, and the belief in the dignity of every person. We offer holistic care that addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs—especially for those living with dementia. Through these values, we’ve seen firsthand how meaningful conversations can empower individuals and bring families closer.

As we begin Dementia Action Week, we encourage you to reflect on the conversations you might need to have. Whether with a loved one, a friend, or a neighbour, your words could make all the difference.

Let this be the week we break the silence. Let this be the week we listen more, speak with kindness, and show that no one walks this journey alone.
