Honouring the dignity of older people through compassionate care and faith

At the Delegation of England of Sisters Hospitallers, our mission is clear: to serve with hospitality, professionalism, and compassion. This July, our focus is on one of the most profound expressions of our charism: the value of mercy and hope in the care of older people, especially those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our centres in England provide care for people with a variety of needs. Among them, three specialised homes (St Teresa’s, St Augustine’s, and Footherley Hall) are dedicated to offering expert, compassionate care to older adults facing the challenges of cognitive decline. Here, mercy is not just a concept; it is lived daily in therapeutic activities, spiritual accompaniment, and personalised support that honour each person’s dignity.

The 5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly (27 July 2025)

This month, we prepare to join the universal Church in observing the 5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, instituted by Pope Francis in 2021. Celebrated on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus, this day reminds us of the invaluable role older generations play in families and communities.

The theme for this year, taken from the Book of Sirach, calls us to reflect deeply: “Blessed are those who have not lost hope.” (Sirach 14:2)

This message speaks to our work at Sisters Hospitallers. Even in the face of memory loss and physical decline, hope endures. Our care is grounded in faith, ensuring that every resident experiences dignity, love, and spiritual support.
