Today marks a momentous occasion for the Church as we joyfully welcome Pope Leo XIV—formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost—as the new successor of St. Peter. His election brings a wave of hope and inspiration to the faithful across the world, particularly for us, the Sisters Hospitallers, who are committed to serving the most vulnerable with compassion and care.
Born in the United States, Cardinal Prevost’s path to the papacy has been one marked by deep faith, dedication, and a commitment to the Gospel. A member of the Augustinian Order, he has spent much of his life in pastoral service, first as a priest and later as a leader in the Church. His work within the Congregation for Bishops and as the Archbishop of Chicago made him a trusted figure within the Vatican and the global Church. Known for his deep spirituality and humility, Cardinal Prevost has always focused on bringing people together through peace, justice, and a deep love for Christ.
Pope Leo XIV is no stranger to hardship. Throughout his journey, he has shown resilience in his work to address issues of poverty, inequality, and social justice. His experience working with communities in need aligns beautifully with our mission as Sisters Hospitallers—serving the sick, the poor, and the marginalized with love and dignity.
In his first address as pope, Pope Leo XIV shared a message of peace, faith, and unity:
“This is the disarmed, humble peace that comes from God—God, who loves us all unconditionally.”
This resonates deeply with our mission as Sisters Hospitallers—our charism of hospitality is rooted in this very message: that true peace and healing come from a loving God who desires our care and service to others.
Pope Leo XIV continued:
“Without fear, hand in hand with God and one another, let us move forward and be disciples of Christ.”
His words remind us of the importance of walking together, united in faith, to bring about a better world for all.
Pope Leo XIV also expressed deep gratitude for the service of Pope Francis, whose leadership has inspired so many. As he begins this new chapter, Pope Leo XIV reflected:
“Thank you to Pope Francis. I walk with you all as a united Church, always seeking peace and justice.”
As Sisters Hospitallers, we share in that gratitude, remembering Pope Francis’s transformative work and his calls for mercy and care for the poor. We now pray for Pope Leo XIV, that his papacy will be filled with wisdom, compassion, and a deep commitment to the Gospel of peace.
Pope Leo XIV’s journey is one that calls us all to deeper faith, unity, and action. As we enter this new chapter under his leadership, let us commit to walking hand in hand with him and with Christ, advancing as true disciples.
Join us in keeping Pope Leo XIV in our prayers, that God may guide him in leading the Church with wisdom and compassion.
